Biography
Early career spent as part of a Joint consortium involved in the development of a sub-unit peptide vaccine against Plasmodium falciparum (malaria) and attached to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) (1986-1992). Doctoral studies in liver transplantation undertaken with Department of Surgery, Dokkyo Medical University (Japan) and while part of the Joint Transplantation Biology Program (University of Queensland (surgery), Queensland Liver Transplant Service and QIMR).
Extensive trips to Japan and interaction with the Japanese pharmaceutical industry (1993-April 1997). Post-doctoral studies examining the pathogenesis of autoimmune myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy done with the Department of Cardiology, University of Wales College of Medicine (United Kingdom) and also held a consultancy with the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Liver Transplant Program (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) (1997-2000).
Returned to Tasmania, Australia to head up the surgical research laboratory in the Discipline of Surgery, School of Medicine, University of Tasmania and establish a proteomics unit (2000-2005). Returned to Brisbane where briefly worked on dendritic cell biology approaches for breast cancer treatment with the Mater Medical Research Institute (2006) before moving to an academic appointment with the Australian Catholic University (2007-onwards).
Currently teaching into the Bachelor of Biomedical Science Degree (cell biology, microbiology/immunology and four units in pharmacology) with research interests in vaccine design, COVID-19 vaccine responses and infectious disease. Have served on advisory committees to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) (ACB 2013, ACSOM 2015-2016, TGC 2015-2016) and currently a specialist advisor to TGA advisory committees.
