Biography

My scientific contributions are about automatic control grouped into different lines of work.
In the first one, I worked on advances of the problem of signal estimation and process control under the paradigm of scarce measurements with delays, with an emphasis on processes controlled through communication networks. In this line, of a more theoretical nature, I acquired the scientific technical capacity to solve control problems with guarantees through the approach of modeling signal norms and solving optimization problems, as well as recursive estimation techniques. I also addressed the problem of event-based control to reduce congestion in communication networks and the use of batteries of wireless sensors, based on the idea of co-design.
On the other hand, I have also addressed the issue of fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control, with contributions to both theoretical issues and multiple applications (wind turbines, multistage manufacturing systems, distillation towers, leak detection or control in wastewater treatment plants). Other ideas that I have developed in the estimation of signals and their application to fault diagnosis, are about the use of recursive techniques for the joint identification of parameters and states, which has been applied to diagnosis and quality control in manufacturing systems.
Another of the lines that I have worked on is the design of advanced controllers for complex processes such as wind turbines, cold production systems and wastewater treatment, where non-linear control problems and optimization problems are jointly addressed in order to search for optimal operating points.
Finally, I have dedicated part of the research to the control problem in electrical grids, proposing new controllers for offshore wind farms, as well as to the development of PID design techniques.
The whole research has been funded through a predoctoral contract (FPI) and through the participation in several research projects. As a result I have more than 100 publications including JCR indexed journal papers, international conferences, domestic conferences, and teaching conferences. I also have a regular activity in the evaluation of articles for journals indexed in JCR.
Regarding my contributions to society, the participation in several research contracts with companies is noteworthy, where different control problems have been addressed (precision temperature controls, and control in wastewater treatment plants), as well as their implementation in embedded platforms and electronic design. During the 2019-2020 period, I did a 600-hour stay in a technological company for the implementation of tools for prediction, fault diagnosis and process control under the industry 4.0 paradigm.
Regarding the training of young researchers, I have supervised (or co-supervised) five doctoral theses, 8 collaboration scholarships from the Ministry and others for initiation to research, and I have supervised more than 57 final degree projects (TFM, TFG and PFC).
