Biography
Ren-yuan Zhu is a Senior Research Scientist of Caltech. Dr. Zhu earned his Ph.D. in Physics from in 1983. During the past several decades, Dr. Zhu’s research in instruments has focused mainly on the development of precision electromagnetic crystal calorimetry for HEP. He participated in the design and construction of the BaBar CsI(Tl) calorimeter, the L3 BGO calorimeter and the CMS PWO calorimeter, and is actively involved in the Mu2e CsI crystal calorimeter and the LYSO:Ce crystal-based Shashlik calorimeter option for the proposed CMS upgrade for HL-LHC. He has made significant contributions to the study and understanding of the radiation damage in scintillating crystals, such as BGO, BaF2, CsI(Tl), CsI, PWO and LYSO:Ce. His work has played a major role in developing high quality crystals for particle physics and medical imaging and has made further contributions to precision calibration and monitoring for crystal calorimeters in HEP experiments.
