Personal information

Biography

I work with Irish Aid and the HSE Global Health Service to provide QI and Patient Safety programmes in Mozambique, Ethiopia, Sudan and Tanzania, supporting the MOH in each country.

In Ireland I run QI programmes for the Royal College of Physicians and the HSE. I have helped to develop QI in Ireland to provide the foundation for the future of healthcare in the country.

In the past I was at ISQua CEO from 2016-May 2021. Under my leadership ISQua became a leader in quality and safety in health and healthcare, as well as being the gold standard for external evaluation.

I studied at the Harvard School of Public Health with a Masters in Public Health and at IHI 2005-6. At Great Ormond Street Hospital I developed the transformation program - Zero Harm No Waits No Waste and at the Royal Free Hospital I introduced a 24/7 consultant delivered paediatric services.

I trained as a paediatrician in South Africa and from 1987 worked at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, as Director of the Child Development Clinic and Senior Consultant Paediatrician and Senior Lecturer in Child Health at the University of Cape Town. I worked on the team that wrote the Child Health Policy for the ANC in 1992-94.

From 1994 to 1996 I was Consultant Paediatrician at Queens Hospital NHS Trust Nottingham, before moving to Northwick Park Hospital NHS Trust (to become North West London Hospitals NHS Trust). I stayed at NWLH NHS Trust for almost 9 years and during that time was Designated Doctor for Safeguarding Children for Harrow, Clinical Director for Children’s Services, Clinical Director for Women’s Services and Deputy Medical Director.
