Biography

I currently use models systems such as colonization in extreme and emerging environments, emerging diseases and interactions between different marine communities in vitro to test ecological theories; in particular, to understand the role of functional diversity and competition in the early evolution of life. I have taken a lead in the development of new frontiers of research in microbial interactions targeting marine metagenomics, chemosynthetic communities, sediment sequestration of carbon and the colonization of novel environments. I have also initiated new interdisciplinary approaches on microbiome interactions (with chemists in the aerial environment), environmental modification (with physicists in ice nucleation activity) and in microbe-environment interactions (biogeochemistry of communities with glaciologists).
