Biography
Dr Alex Boyd MA (Hons) MSc FRSA CF FSA(Scot) is a Scottish-German visual artist, writer and curator. His work examines landscape, conservation, identity and the underlying tensions which exist in place. Militarism and military conservation are a particular focus of enquiry. Boyd works primarily as a photographer and printmaker, a practice that has incorporated early techniques such as wet-plate collodion and calotype through to contemporary image capture systems such as drones.
His first book St Kilda - The Silent Islands was shortlisted for a prestigious Saltire Society Award. His work is also held in several public collections including the V&A in London, The Royal Scottish Academy, National Galleries of Scotland, and The Yale Center for British Art in the USA.
He has completed a Doctorate Of Philosophy in Visual And Material Cultures Research at the University of Northumbria. In 2021 he organised the conference ' Arran - An Artistic Legacy' which focused on two centuries of artistic practice on the Isle of Arran in Scotland.
He has contributed to numerous publications including Archipelago, National Geographic, the Island Review and many more.
He is an affiliate of The University of St Andrews department of Environmental Ethics, and a member of the Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Environmental History Network. He is also a member of the Occupation Studies Network. In 2024 he was made an Honorary Research Fellow at Birkbeck, University of London.
