Biography
Dr. Charles Reigeluth is a distinguished educational researcher and consultant who focuses on paradigm change in education. He has a B.A. in Economics from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Instructional Psychology from Brigham Young University. He taught high school science for three years, was a Professor in the Instructional Systems Technology Department at Indiana University for 25 years, and was chairman of the department for three years.
Reigeluth's research focuses on paradigm change in public education, including the design of high-quality personalized competency-based instruction, the design of technology systems to support such instruction, and the process for transforming school systems to the learner-centered paradigm of education. He facilitated a paradigm change process in the Decatur Township Schools in Indianapolis for 11 years to develop more knowledge about how to help school systems to transform.
Reigeluth is internationally known for his work on instructional methods and theories. He has published 13 books and over 200 journal articles and chapters on those subjects, and five of his books received an "outstanding book of the year" award from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT). He has received the "Distinguished Service" award from AECT and the "Honored Alumnus" award from Brigham Young University's School of Education.
Reigeluth's most recent books are Merging the Instructional Design Process with Learner-Centered Theory: The Holistic 4D Model (2021), which incorporates many innovations into the instructional development process, including integrating instructional theory into the process; Vision and Action: Reinventing Schools through Personalized Competency-Based Education (2020), which is the culmination of much of his work on paradigm change and instructional theory; and Instructional-Design Theories and Models, Volume IV: The Learner-Centered Paradigm of Education (2017), and edited volume that describes some of the most important developments regarding the design of personalized competency-based education.
