Biography
Lisa Winstanley is an Assistant Professor in the School of Art Design & Media at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. With 20 years of commercial experience and over a decade of international research and teaching, she explores ethical and collaborative design practices and pedagogies. Her creative work has received over 80 international design awards, including the Red Dot Design Award, five A’ Design Awards, four Gold Graphis Awards, two iF Awards, and a Platinum Spark Award. Her work has been internationally showcased at over 60 exhibition venues in 30 countries, such as the Oculus in New York, Moholy-Nagy University of Art & Design in Budapest, the National Museum of Art in Bolivia, and the Dongdaemun Design Plaza in South Korea.
Lisa’s scholarly research explores the intersections of ethical design practices and pedagogies with an emphasis on developing visual literacy. To comprehensively investigate this topic, she established the Design Ethics and Visual Integrity Lab (DEVIL) which adopts a dyadic approach that examines two interconnected research pillars:
i. Transformative strategies for addressing visual plagiarism
ii. Practice-led design research exploring interdisciplinary social responsibility
This research dyad is united by the common focus of fostering ethical practices in design, ensuring that visual integrity, ethical collaboration, and social responsibility are at the forefront of her approach to visual communication.
Lisa serves as an advisory board member and editorial board member for the International Journal of the Image - Common Grounds Research Networks. A Member of the C-IDEA International Education Association and is the current jury chair of the Global Undergraduate Awards for the Visual Arts Category.
