Biography
Dr. Asad Naeem stands out as an exceptional candidate for this versatile project, with intersectoral experience in the fields of structural and earthquake engineering, encompassing research, academia, and industry. Holding a combined M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Structural and Earthquake Engineering from Sungkyunkwan University, his impressive CGPA of 4.32/4.50 highlights academic excellence. As an Assistant Professor at Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering, and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), he has adeptly taught various courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Civil Engineering and Architecture departments, shows his excellent communication and teaching skills. Furthermore, his supervision of 10 graduate and more than 40 undergraduate students in their thesis and research projects demonstrates his ability to mentor and guide future researchers. Additionally, his involvement in various research and commercial projects, along with his 11 publications in reputable scientific journals, presentations at international conferences, and patented retrofitting schemes, underscore his expertise in innovative seismic engineering and retrofitting of structures. As a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the field of structures from the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), he brings 10 years of experience in seismic design for mid-rise reinforced concrete and steel building structures in construction industry. Notably, his collaboration with the international NGO Islamic Relief Pakistan resulted in the successful execution of a seismic evaluation and rehabilitation project for 20 girl’s high schools and 20 basic health units (local hospitals) in the disaster-prone area of Baluchistan, Pakistan, funded by the Asian Development Bank. Furthermore, Asad's recent experience as a post-doctoral researcher at the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo, Japan, enhanced his research abilities. During this, he successfully accomplished various projects, including the development of self-centering seismic dampers, participation in shake table tests for timber and steel structures, and engagement in structural health monitoring which scientific publications demonstrate his proficiency and expertise. Combined with Asad’s strong background in finite element analysis and structural analysis software, as well as his proficiency in CAD and BIM programs, he is well-equipped to handle the technical aspects of the research. While his previous contributions focused primarily on reinforced concrete and steel structures, a deep understanding of the environmental impact of conventional materials drives Asad's passion for conducting research and developing innovative tools and systems for timber applications in construction.
