Biography

S M Sohel Murshed is currently a professor of Thermofluids and Energy Conversion Technologies at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, Portugal. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore in 2007. Previously he also worked at NTU, Singapore and at University of Central Florida, USA. Prof. Murshed was visiting professor at several universities and institutes such as Imperial College London, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Indian Institute of Technology.
Prof. Murshed is enlisted in the rankings of World's Top 2% Scientists (both Career and single year of 2021 impact lists) that was published by Stanford University in October 10, 2022. His position in the list of single year (2021) is 16080 out of 200409 Scientists. Notably, he ranked 45th among 763 listed scientists from Portugal in the list for the impact of single year 2021.
Besides 12 books and 35 book-chapters he has so far authored/co-authored more than 200 scientific publications in leading international journals and conferences. Several of his papers have been classified as Highly Cited Papers by Web of Science (Essential Science Indicators). His current citation count is 10530 with h-index of 42.
Prof Murshed has received ULisboa/CGD Scientific Award 2022 (Premios Cientifico Universidade de Lisboa/Caixa Geral de Depósitos 2022) in the areas of Mechanical, Naval and Aerospace Engineering for his exceptional scientific contributions and impacts. He received the DUO-India Professor Fellowship Award 2020 (under ASEM-DUO Fellowship Program). Two of his co-authored papers (from his group) received Best Paper Awards in 8th World Congress on Momentum, Heat and Mass Transfer (MHMT23), 26-28 April 2023, Lisbon, Portugal. Another co-authored paper (from his lab) received Enrique Julia Award 2021 in 3rd European Symposium on Nanofluids (ESNF), 9-10 September 2021, Iasi, Romania.

He has served as an editor of-Journal of Nanofluids (American Scientific Publishers) from 2012-2020 and is currently the Chief Editor (Section-Micro- and Nano- Scale Heat Transfer) of Frontiers in Thermal Engineering, an Associate Editor of Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (Springer), guest editor of special issues of "Nanomaterials" (MDPI). He is also member of editorial board of several other international journals. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and American Society of Thermal and Fluids Engineers (ASTFE) and European Thermoelectric Society (ETS).
Prof Murshed is a management committee member nominated by FCT (Portugal) of European COST action CA21156: FOLIAGE (2022-2026). He was also management committee member and a group leader of European COST action, CA15119: NanoUptake (2016-2020). He is also a core team member of European commission's CIG project (NANOConVEX: 2020-2021).He is the PI of an ongoing project-"NanoCOM" funded by FCT, Portugal. He has regularly been serving as an expert evaluator for the European Commission and for funding agencies of different countries like The Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Czech Republic, Romania, Portugal and so on. He also acts as an external reviewer for many international PhD theses like Imperial College London as well as about 40 international journals including numbers of top level ones like "Nature".
His main research interests include nanofluids, ionanocolloids, micro- and nanoscale heat transfer, nanomaterials-fluids systems, heat exchangers, microfluidics, renewable energy harvesting and storage, advanced energy and cooling technologies.
