STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
My name is Epebinu Abayomi Dennis, I am a self-motivated student with genuine interest in pure mathematics. I write to state my interest in joining the Doctoral degree program in the area of pure mathematics at the University of Silesia, Katowice. My interest in this field is steered by the inherent elegance and beauty of the subjects and my curiosity to understand and hopefully provide solutions to some of the various mathematical problems. I am motivated by the tremendous importance of how pure mathematics is related to other mathematical disciplines. For some years now, I have acclimatised myself on how to provide step by step proof to different theorems and also to link the importance of those theorems to its real-world applications.
I had my Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where I finished as the second-best students in my class with a cumulative grade point average of 4.01 on a scale of 5.0 (80.2%). I had taken relevant undergraduate courses such as; Functional Analysis, Numerical Analysis, Differential Equations, Real Analysis, Algebraic Topology, Statistics, Linear Algebra, Advance Calculus, Complex Analysis e.t.c.. Through these courses, I have developed first-rate skills in the formulation and solution techniques (theoretical, analytical and numerical) of functional analysis (metric space, normed space, Banach spaces, Hilbert space e.t.c), Game Theory, Real analysis, measure theory and integration (I won the award for the best student in measure theory and integration recognised by the university during graduation), Electromagnetics theory (with an overall score of 95% ), Topological spaces, Algebra(groups and rings) e.t.c.. Also, I am proficient in the use of some programming languages, like Matlab, Python and SageMath. In my fourth year, sequel to my outstanding academic performance, I represented the university at the national level where I participated at the National Mathematics Competition for University Students (NAMCUS) which I performed excellently.
In 2020, I won the highly competitive Erasmus Intermaths Scholarship to pursue a double masters at the University of L’Aquila and Ivan Franko National University, Lviv, Ukraine. I have completed my first year in Mathematical Engineering with a cumulative grade of 22.5/30 at the University of L’Aquila, Italy. Due to the war going on currently in Ukraine, I have been transferred to University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland, where I also took courses in Mathematics of Finance - Discrete Models and Dynamical Systems on Measures-Finance, Physical and Biological Models. I graduated June 2022, I had taken relevant graduate courses such as the basics of Monte Carlo Simulation, Functional Analysis, Complex Analysis, Data Analytics and Data Driven Decision, Decision Making Techniques and Tools, Kinetic Theory, Optimisation of Complex System and so on. I am currently attending Professor Pales lectures on Principles of Convex Optimization.
I chose the PhD programme in pure mathematics because it would avail me the opportunity to specialize in area of pure mathematics where I would be able to do what I love best which is to analyse, prove and provide solutions to different problems. For some months I have been working with Dr hab. Tomasz Szostok and this has been a very great motivation for me because it stairs up my willingness and hunger to really work using stochastic ordering tools. I have gone through the course curriculum and I am confident that my academic background cut across relevant prerequisites courses.
Aside from academics, I love watching football and playing tennis. I appreciate the value of diligence and team spirit and I have learned that dedication is important for individual and team success. I was also able to manage my post as the captain of the Department of Mathematics Football Team (OAU Chapter) and this has helped to improve my leadership and prioritization skills.
Also, I have always taught colleagues and junior ones some mathematical courses like Functional Analysis, Real Analysis, Linear Algebra, Complex analysis, and Numerical analysis. At the end of every semester, I get feedback from those I have taught one or two courses. It interests me to know that every one of the students passed, and they usually attest to how explanatory my classes were. I received an award as the "Most Supportive Tutor" (2018) in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. In the subsequent year, I received an award as the "Best Tutor" of the graduating set (2019). In 2018/2019 academic session, I was placed on the Dean's list as a result of my academic brilliance. Based on my relevant professional, academic, leadership, research skills, I believe I would be a good fit for the PhD program at the University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland.
I therefore, look forward to a favourable consideration. Thank you.
