Biography

Fawzia A. Alshubaily is an Associate Professor in Biochemistry Department at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Fawzia was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She graduated from the 4th Secondary School in Riyadh, and from King Abdulaziz University at Jeddah with a First Honor of Excellence in Bachelor of Biochemistry in May 1992. She remained at King Abdulaziz University to complete her Master of Science Degree in Biochemistry with Honor of Excellence in May 1995.
After receiving her master’s, Fawzia was recruited for a teaching position as a lecturer at the biochemistry department, where she taught for around 11 years. Later on, she was sponsored by the University in 2007 to continue her education abroad; she chose the University of Glasgow, Scotland, to commence her studies, where she received her Ph.D. degree in “Protein Bioinformatics” under the supervision of Prof. James E. Milner-White as her supervisor in 2011. She later returned to King Abdulaziz University and started teaching the following courses: general biochemistry, computer application in biochemistry for undergraduates and master’s students, and laboratory safety course. She was also supervising research projects for undergraduates and master’s students and was keen on publishing their work.

Fawziah is currently focusing on natural products applications as parts of alternative medicine like chitosan, shilajit, coconut, coriander, and moringa, and also researches small protein structural motifs, for example, nests, ASX motifs and Schellman loops (searching for extra hydrogen bonding in the loops along with other motifs). She is interested in enhancing her skills, knowledge and experience in structural bioinformatics for proteins and genes. In addition, she is keen on learning about CRISPR technology for gene editing. Her future interests in research topics and her specific interest in attending this course are guided by her passion for passing on the part of this knowledge to her students and applying it through her future publications.
