Biography
I am a physician/scientist with considerable surgical and research experience. My work as a trauma surgeon at Abu Salim Trauma Hospital affiliated with University of Tripoli honed my surgical skills. My research experience began in the laboratory of Dr. Fanburg at Tufts Medical Center, Boston, where I developed proficiency in several biomedical research techniques. My research interests have evolved to focus on understanding and limiting the complications associated with medical devices used to support children with heart or lung failure, including cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and central venous catheters (CVC). I’ve been collaborating with Drs. James Tweddell, David Morales, Farhan Zafar and Joseph Palumbo on projects related to ECMO and CPB. This work includes developing a variety of clinically relevant animal models to help further our understanding of the hemostasis/thrombosis and inflammatory related complications associated with ECMO and CPB, and to test novel therapeutic targets for mitigation of ECMO/CPB-induced pathologies. To this end, I have developed clinically relevant murine, rat and rabbit models of complete veno-arterial ECMO, and rat and rabbit models of CPB. The proposed studies build upon my research experience and surgical skills to define interventions to decrease life-threatening coagulation associated with extracorporeal life support.
