Biography
Professor in the Department of Biosystems Engineering at FZEA-USP, with expertise in the development of sustainable materials and innovative strategies for CO2 sequestration. His research is distinguished by the pursuit of technological solutions that promote sustainability in civil construction and contribute to climate change mitigation. His main areas of focus include the development of solutions for the use of agro-industrial by-products in civil construction, the promotion of the circular economy, ECODESIGN, and the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Furthermore, his studies encompass special concretes, lightweight concrete, and concrete microstructure, with an emphasis on reducing environmental impact and carbon sequestration. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain (07/2017 to 07/2018), where he deepened his studies in sustainable solutions for civil construction. He holds a Habilitation in Architecture, Urbanism, and Technology (EESC-USP, 2009), a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering (EESC/IFSC/IQSC-USP, 2003), with a research exchange at LNEC-Lisbon, and a Master’s degree in Architecture and Urbanism (EESC-USP, 1999). He graduated in Civil Engineering (EESC-USP, 1993). He served as Head of the Department of Biosystems Engineering at FZEA-USP (11/2014 to 05/2017) and, since 08/2018, has been the Vice-Mayor of the Fernando Costa Campus in Pirassununga-SP. Author of the book "Structural Lightweight Concrete: Production, Properties, Microstructure, and Applications" (PINI Publishing). Currently, he is an accredited advisor for the Graduate Program in Engineering and Materials Science (FZEA-USP) and leads the CNPq I-Mat research group (Innovation in Sustainable Materials). He has been a member of the BioSMat Research Support Center - Materials for Biosystems at USP since 2012. His projects are aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contributing innovative solutions to global challenges. Focusing on SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), he has developed technologies for sustainable materials promoting the circular economy. In addition, he has projects related to SDG 13 (Climate Action), addressing CO2 sequestration and carbon emissions reduction. Research linked to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) also explore the use of renewable energies and the economic impact of sustainable innovations.
