Biography

Prof. Leszek Kalinowski, M.D., Ph.D., is an experienced researcher in clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine. He is a professor of medicine at the Medical University of Gdansk, Gdansk, Poland (MUG), as well as a professor at the Department of Mechanics of Materials and Structures, BioTechMed Center, at the Gdansk University of Technology, the Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdansk, Poland. He is the head of the Division of Medical Laboratory Diagnostics and the Department of Clinical Analytics at MUG. He is a pioneer of biobanking in Poland and a co-founder of the Polish Biobanking Network BBMRI.pl (Biobanking and BioMolecular Resources Research Infrastructure in Poland) as well as the Fahrenheit’s Biobank BBMRI.pl at MUG. In the years 2016-2021, he held the position of Deputy of the National Biobanking Coordinator and the National co-Representative of the Polish Biobanking Network Consortium (BBMRI.pl). At present, he holds the position of the national coordinator for rare diseases in Poland and is an active member of multiple working groups at BBMRI.eu. His research interests focus on novel approaches for personalized medicine in civilized diseases, especially furthering basic understanding of the patho-physiology of the endothelium as well as enabling targeted molecular diagnostics and pharmacological interventions. He has significant experience with preclinical and clinical translational studies, including international collaborations with leading academic centers in Europe and the US. During his academic career, he has held positions at Ohio University, Athens, OH, US, as well as the School of Medicine, Yale University, New Haven, CT, US, and is currently a visiting professor at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL, US.
