Biography
Dr. Alban Kuriqi is a distinguished researcher and academic specializing in Civil Engineering with a focus on Renewable Energy and Water Management. He earned his Ph.D. in River Restoration and Management from the University of Lisbon in 2021, where he developed an innovative methodology for optimizing small hydropower plant energy output while reducing ecological disturbances. He also holds a five-year integrated diploma in Civil/Hydrotechnical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Tirana and an M.Sc. in Civil Engineering, specializing in Water Resources and Hydraulics, from Epoka University and Grenoble Institute of Technology.
With over 14 years of diverse experience, Dr. Kuriqi has excelled in engineering, project development, design, management, and academic roles. His work spans a wide array of projects, including hydropower design, river rehabilitation, embankment and hydraulic structures, water and wastewater systems, and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). His technical expertise extends to data acquisition and implementation of weather radar technologies for hydrometeorological applications.
He has served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University for Business and Technology, where he teaches Hydrology II and River Rehabilitation and Restoration, and he has previously lectured on Hydrology, Fluid Mechanics, and Groundwater Engineering at Epoka University. His teaching philosophy emphasizes the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical applications in civil and environmental engineering.
His interdisciplinary research interests encompass renewable energy (especially hydropower and its complementarities), river restoration, e-flows, flood and drought management, climate adaptation, fluvial hydraulics, sediment transport, and the use of artificial intelligence in water resources engineering. His work has been recognized through several awards, including his ranking among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in Civil Engineering and Environmental Science by Stanford University for multiple consecutive years.
Dr. Kuriqi has an impressive academic portfolio, with over 140 peer-reviewed journal articles, four book chapters, and more than 20 conference presentations. He has co-organized five international conferences and actively contributes to the global scientific community as a reviewer for top-tier journals, Marie Skłodowska-Curie grants, and European Research Executive Agency projects, among others. Additionally, he serves on the editorial boards of 13 ISI-indexed journals, reflecting his commitment to advancing research in civil and environmental engineering. Dr. Kuriqi’s interdisciplinary approach to research and passion for sustainable engineering solutions continue to make a significant impact on both academia and industry.
