Gaby David

Biography

I am a visual sociologist, researcher, artist, performer, and university lecturer.
I hold a Ph.D. in visual sociology from the Center for Art History and Theory at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris (EHESS), a Master's in Fine Arts from the University of Paris 8, and a Master’s degree in teaching English (ToEFL).

With an approach at the intersection of visual and mobile culture studies, I analyze the construction of meanings through an analysis of the vernacular uses and practices of popular images and objects.

As a researcher, I am an active member of the “Mobile Creation” group from IRCAV, Institute for Film and Audiovisual Research at the Sorbonne Nouvelle. In addition, and as an anglisist, Gaby is also a fellow researcher at TransCrit, Transferts Critiques Anglophones, at the University of Paris 8. Currently, I am an elected board member of the executive committee of the International Association of Visual Sociology, which awarded my thesis as one of the three best theses of 2016.

I have participated in several international conferences, contributed to numerous books, and published articles in specialized academic journals both in English and French. I have been teaching for more than 20 years (in the private sector) and for more than 10 years in various departments and universities in Paris. My courses are participatory and interdisciplinary, dealing with topics intrinsic to visual culture.

I have lived in Uruguay, the USA, Israel, and France, and I define myself as multidisciplinary, multilingual, and multicultural.

Doctora en sociología visual egresada del Centro de Historia y Teoría del Arte de la Escuela de altos estudios en ciencias sociales de Paris (EHESS), magister en Artes Plásticas de la Universidad de París 8 y profesora de ingles segunda lengua (TEFL).

Soy miembro activo del grupo “Creación móvil” del Instituto de Investigación Cinematográfica y Audiovisual de la Sorbonne Nouvelle y estoy afiliada a Transferts critiques anglophones, de la Universidad de París 8. He sido votada para formar parte de la junta directiva de la IVSA. He coeditado dos publicaciones, contribuido en numerosos congresos internacionales, libros y artículos, en ingles y francés. Soy docente hace mas de 20 años y llevo más de 10 impartiendo clases en diversas universidades de Paris.

Mis cursos son participativos y abordados desde la interdisciplinaridad, versando sobre temas intrínsecos a la cultura visual y la cultura móvil. Con un abordaje a la intersección de la sociología de la cultura, estudio las construcciones de significados a través del análisis de los usos y practicas vernaculares de la imagen móvil en línea. He vivido en Uruguay, EEUU, Israel y actualmente en Francia; artista-performer profesora de ingles, me defino pluridisciplinaria, poliglota y multiculturalista.

Son approche est interdisciplinaire et alimente ses réflexions sur les pratiques des images digitales et connectées.
