Biography

Mwalimu Samson Gunga is a Teacher Educator and professor of Philosophy of Education in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education of the University of Nairobi (UON) (1992 to date). Having a keen interest in the Philosophy of Education, remote learning, and Distance Education, Mwalimu Gunga has written several journal articles on the philosophy of education and integrating philosophic deliberations within remote learning environments. Additionally, he has authored e-books and e-learning modules for both the University of Nairobi and the African Virtual University (AVU). He studied Philosophy of (Mathematics) Education at the Master's and Doctor of Philosophy levels; Master's degree in Information Systems and trained in “Teaching and Assessment Online”. He also studied Mathematics and Mathematics pedagogy in the Bachelor of Education degree level. Mwalimu Gunga was Chairman of the Department of Educational Foundations (2005-2012) of the University of Nairobi; Dean of the School of Education (2012–2014), and Dean of the Faculty of Education (2019-2021). He has been an external examiner for Kenyatta University, Mount Kenya University, University of Pretoria, UNISA, University of Dar es Salaam, and Moi University. Previously he was teaching mathematics in Kenyan secondary schools, 1981 and 1985 to 1992 before he joined the University of Nairobi.
