Biography
Jérôme Chevalier is currently full Professor at the National Institute of Applied Sciences, in France. He has been Director of the Materials Science (MATEIS, INSA-Lyon, CNRS, University Lyon 1) laboratory between 2014 and 2019 (180 persons) and Director of Carnot Institute Ingenierie@Lyon, which gathers 13 laboratories and 2 technical centers (in total 1700 persons) from 2019 to 2024. He is currently Editor in Chief of the Journal of the European Ceramic Society.
Jérôme Chevalier is mainly recognized for his work on ceramics for healthcare applications, from process towards final properties. He has been focusing especially on zirconia as a biomaterial for orthopedic and dental applications and on the development of innovative glass-ceramics and calcium phosphate ceramics for bone substitute applications. He has also been active in the field of Bulk Metallic Glasses these past 10 years, with the evaluation of the potential of this family of materials in the field of dentistry. More recently Jérôme Chevalier has been appointed responsible of the Chair ‘Innovation for Humanity’ between INSA-Lyon and the NGO Humanity and Inclusion. In this framework, he is also interested on the process of orthoses and prostheses by additive manufacturing, from recycled polymers.
Jérôme Chevalier has co-authored more than 250 papers, holds 10 patents and his work cited more than 20.000 times. He has been member of the ‘Institut Universitaire de France’ (2010-2015), awarded by the French CNRS with the prestigious ‘Innovation Medal’ (2015) and he recently received the Stuijts Award of the European Ceramic Society (2022). He is Fellow of the European Ceramic Society and Member of the Academy of Ceramics and member of the World Academy of Ceramics.
