Biography
I'm a driven PhD student investigating lung cancer metastasis with the ultimate aim to increase the survival of these patients.
Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women around the world and it is the leading cause of cancer-related death in Canada (more than three times the other major types of cancer). As is the case with other cancer types, the main reason for death in patients with lung cancer is metastasis to other organs. EMT is regarded as a prominent prerequisite for cancer cells metastasis, therefore its inhibition can potentially lead to more efficient prevention/inhibition of metastasis in lung cancer patients.
In my doctorate research project, I investigate the modulatory roles of selective mitochondria phagy (i.e. mitophagy) and Extracellular Matrix (ECM) stiffness on the Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) and subsequent metastasis in Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (NSCLC) model. I am interested in elucidating if manipulation of mitophagy can inhibit lung cancer cells to undergo Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) and if so what the playing pathways are. Another focus of my project is to produce a 3-Dimensional (3D) bioprinted model for NSCLC in order to examine how changes in the stiffness of ECM impact EMT and subsequent metastasis in this cancer. This can significantly increase the survival rate of lung cancer patients which is very low (5%) upon metastasis to other organs.
During my M.Sc program, I looked into the involvement of general autophagy pathway in lung cancer metastasis and found promising findings that indicated autophagy inhibition partially reduces the EMT and metastasis of lung cancer cells.
I'm a proud recipient of CIHR-Vanier CGS, the Canadian Lung Association (CLA) PhD Studentship, Ralph A. Mann Memorial Scholarship Award, Manitoba Health Research Council, Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba Studentship, among others.
My extracurricular interests include playing soccer in University of Manitoba Intramural Sports, mentoring summer and research undergraduate students in our lab and volunteering at the Department of Radiology, CancerCare Manitoba.
I'm also Vice-Presisdent Academic (VPA) to the Health Sciences Graduate Student Association (HSGSA) at the University of Manitoba, Canada.
