Biography
I'm currently working as university lecturer (since 2010) and principal investigator (since 2018) in Veterinary Environmental Hygiene at the Department of Food Hygiene and Environmental Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Helsinki. Responsible for developing, organizing and teaching Environmental Health for veterinary students. I also supervise bachelor's, master's, licentiate's and PhD students. I was granted the title of docent (adjunct professor in environmental hygiene) in 2015 after conducting my postdoctoral research in the Academy of Finland designated Centre of Excellence in Microbial Food Safety Research in Professor Marja-Liisa Hänninen's research group.
My research focuses on Campylobacter spp. as zoonotic pathogens utilizing whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and bioinformatics tools to study their taxonomy, ecology, genomic epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance and virulence characteristics in different natural reservoirs, aiming to identify the most important transmission routes in Finland and globally, and the association between different strain characteristics with the clinical outcome of disease. In 2019 I hosted the scientific internship of DVM Beata Wysok from Poland at our department. Also interested in Cryptosporidium and Helicobacter spp. and their molecular epidemiology.
