Biography
Richard Eastell BSc (Hons), MBChB, MD (Edin), FRCP (London, Edin), FRCPI (Hon), FRCPath, FMedSci
Richard Eastell is Professor of Bone Metabolism and Director of the Mellanby Centre for Bone Research at the University of Sheffield. He qualified in medicine from Edinburgh in 1977. He trained in endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic under Dr B L Riggs for 5 years. He leads a research group on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis; of particular note is the contribution to the clinical utility of biochemical markers of bone turnover and the development of treatments for osteoporosis. The publications of the Sheffield group put them in the top 4 internationally in osteoporosis (ISI Thompson). His work has recently been recognised by the Frederick C Bartter Award 2014 (ASBMR) and the Philippe Bordier Award, 2012 (European Calcified Tissue Society).
