Biography

Dirk Verellen is Professor at the Antwerp University, and director of the Medical Physics Group in the Department of Radiotherapy of the Iridium Cancer Network Antwerp, Belgium. Dr. Verellen received the M.Sc. degree in solid state physics at the Antwerp University, Belgium, and a Ph.D. in medical sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He is also guest professor at the University of Ghent for Biomedical Engineering, several continual education programs, and course director for Clinical Practice & Implementation of Image-Guided Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy at the ESTRO School of Radiotherapy and Oncology.

He is author of over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers (Hirsch-index: 38) and editor or contributing author of several books. His main interest is in the practical issues concerning implementation of conformal radiotherapy and image-guidance in a clinical environment, and safety and quality management in radiotherapy. He serve(s)d in the board of editors for the journals “Physics & Imaging in Radiation Oncology”, “Medical Physics”, “Journal of Radiosurgery and SBRT”, and “Radiation Oncology”. Dirk Verellen was awarded as Spinoza Honorary Professor of the University of Amsterdam in 2009, received the prestigious ESTRO Breur Award Lecture in 2015, and the Emanuel van der Schueren award lecture of the BVRO in 2017.

He serves as treasurer, member of the Board of Directors, the Physics Committee and the Radiation Oncology Safety Committee of ESTRO (European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology), and was membership officer 2011-2013. He is currently also board member for Kom Op Tegen Kanker (Stand up to Cancer) and serves in different committees such as the College of Radiation Oncologists in Belgium; the Medical Jury of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC); Nederlandse Commissie voor Stralingsdosimetrie (NCS) sub-committee on Guidelines for Stereotactic Treatments; AAPM Task Group 101 on Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery for the American Association of Medical Physics (AAPM); Task Group 1 on Image-guidance for the European Institute of Radiotherapy (EIR); the Working Group “Radiotherapy Accuracy” of the “Dosimetry and Medical Radiation Physics Section” of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); and the Belgian Quality Audit Programme for radiotherapy.

Dirk Verellen is happily married, and proud father of 4 children.
