Biography
Susie Salmon is Director of Legal Writing and Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Arizona. Professor Salmon's scholarship explores how longstanding practices and values in legal education affect access to justice, bias in the profession, and the legal profession as a whole; her recent scholarship also involves theoretical and empirical inquiries into the role dissenting opinions play as precedent. In 2022, the College of Law recognized Professor Salmon as a Distinguished Public Service Scholar. A nationally recognized expert on moot court who has coached the College of Law's ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition teams for over fifteen years, Professor Salmon authored A Short & Happy Guide to Moot Court and co-authored the Legal Writing Institute's Moot Court Advisors Handbook. She also frequently presents to local, national, and international audiences on issues related to legal communication, rhetoric, and advocacy. Trained as a commercial litigator, with nine years of experience at large law firms in Los Angeles and Tucson, Professor Salmon remains active in the legal community; she is a past Chair of the Southern Arizona Chapter of the Arizona Women Lawyers Association and was recognized with the organization's Margaret Truman Leadership Award in 2023 for her service to the profession. She remains an active member of the Arizona State Bar. Professor Salmon is also a leader in the national legal-writing community; she served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Legal Writing Directors for several years, and she was President of the Board of the Legal Writing Institute from 2022 to 2024.
