Biography
Nuno Canha is a Lead Researcher at Hylab since January 2024, where he is the coordinator of the Safety and Risk Assessment Unit regarding the end-use of green hydrogen.
The main R&D&I topics are:
1) Optimisation of methodologies for assessing H2 leaks in different contexts (via simulation and experimental)
2) Strategies for assessing and minimising risk in the storage, transport and use of H2
3) Definition of best practices to ensure safety in the H2 value chain
N. Canha holds a MSc in Chemistry from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) - University of Lisbon (Portugal) and completed his PhD in Environmental Sciences at the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) in 2014. During his PhD, he worked at the C2TN research center (Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares) of IST and focused his research on the indoor air quality in primary schools to identify and characterise the sources of particulate matter (PM) in classrooms.
In 2015, N. Canha started his postdoctoral position at C2TN-IST and at CESAM (Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies) of the University of Aveiro with the aim of assessing the toxicity potential of PM and to assess the human exposure to air pollutants in different micro-environments. In 2022, he started as an auxiliary researcher at C2TN to study PM sources and their contribution to the integrated daily human exposure, as well as to understand their health effects (based on the oxidative potential).
N. Canha has participated in European projects from different funding programmes (LIFE Programme, H2020, Horizon Europe, EEA Grants, Interreg Sudoe, Interreg MED, COST Actions, IAEA) with different roles, from proposal writing to the implementation of technical, management and communication tasks. He has been involved in 26 projects (including 2 as Principal Investigator (PI), and 2 as Co-PI).
To disseminate his research, N. Canha has published 6 books, 4 book chapters and 69 articles (30 as first author) in peer-reviewed international scientific journals (ISI), with a total of 1756 citations and an h-index of 26 (Scopus). He has made 172 contributions at national and international scientific conferences.
From 2021 to 2023, he was an Invited Assistant Professor at IST’s Department of Chemical Engineering, where he lectured the Chemistry course. He supervised 12 BSc, 7 MSc and 2 PhD students. He was juri member in academic examinations (6 MSc and 1 PhD) and evaluator of research projects.
N. Canha has always actively promoted and participated in several science communication activities to different types of public.
