Biography
Hermann Schmitt is an Emeritus Professor of Political Science at the University of Manchester and a Research Fellow of the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research. Besides having contributed to many comparative projects, he was a member of the planning committee of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (1993–2009) for three CSES modules; a principle investigator of the European Election Studies in 1994, 2004, 2014 and 2019; and the initiator and chair (2006–2016) of the Comparative Candidate Survey. He also served as a co-director of the BES between 2014 and 2017. He has co-edited some 20 comparative datasets, most of them based on cross-nationally comparative mass survey data, but also party elite survey data and party manifesto content analyses. He has (co-) authored and (co-)edited 21 books and more than a hundred journal articles and book chapters. In terms of research funding, he obtained grants - usully in co-operation with others - in the order of magnitude of altogether over 15 mio DM/Euro.
