Biography
Yankho Kaimila has a PhD in Nutritional Epidemiology from the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences obtained in 2020. She obtained her Master of Medical Science degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Sheffield in 2014. She is a tenured lecturer in the Biological Sciences department of the University of Malawi and a post-doctoral reseacher at the University of Reading. She founded a consulting research company called Nutrition Wellness Consultants in October of 2014 whose research interests are in combating all forms of malnutrition in Malawi and Africa. In January of 2019, she opened a center ( Nutrition Wellness Center) that uses evidence based practices for the prevention and management of overweight/obesity, lifestyle and dietary related non communicable diseases, a first of its kind in Malawi. She is championing the incorporation of nutritionist into the health system of Malawi for the prevention and management of diseases. She is working with other nutritionists, dietitians and health professionals within the University of Malawi to create guidelines for registering nutritionists as medical practitioners. She is a mentor for nutritionists through provision of internships and mentorship programs at her companies. She volunteers her professional expertise in local television programs to help educate the Malawian population on healthy living. She is currently building a meal planning and tracking nutrition database for the prevention and management of non communicable diseases that will be easily accessible by marginalized populations without internet connection.
- Awarded a travel grant to attend and present work at the Agriculture, Nutition and Health (ANH) science week by the ANH Academy in 2023
- Awarded full scholarship for PhD studies by Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in collaboration with Washington University in St Louis in July 2015
- Awarded full scholarship for a Masters degree in Human Nutrition by Wellcome in 2013
- Awarded 2 grants to research on the species of butterflies found in Liwonde national park during the wet and dry season by Wilderness Trust 2013
