Biography
As a clinical immunologist and immunopathologist I have a broad background in clinical management of HIV and immunodeficiency. In addition I have extensive experience in HIV biology and particularly in the study of cellular immunology of HIV infection of T cells and dendritic cells. I spent 3 years as a post Doc with noble laureate Ralph Steinman and returned to lead a research group funded continuously by the NHMRC at the Burnet Institute and the University of Melbourne from 1993 to 2002. I subsequently returned to full time clinical practice in immunopathology for 2 years before joining the Infectious Diseases Unit at the Alfred Hospital and the research laboratory of Prof Sharon Lewin. I have a number of highly cited publication on dendritic cells and HIV. Our subsequent work has focused on primary cells and ex vivo models of HIV infection. We have developed a novel model for generation of latency in response to chemokines and during dendritic cell T cell cocultures. These models have provided insights into strategies to effect HIV clearance and cure.
