Biography

I am a Senior Researcher (Principal Investigator) in the Translational Neuropsychophamacology Research Unit at the Albacete General Hospital (affiliated with Castilla-La Mancha University; Spain) since February 2002. I am currently the Coordinator of the Unit.

I received both my Bachelor (1988) and my PhD (1993) degrees from the Faculty of Biology, Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). I have been a visiting Scientist at the School of Biological Sciences, University of Surrey (Guildford, UK), Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Psychology, University of Toronto (Toronto, ON, Canada), Reseach Associate at the Neuroscience Institute, Miguel Hernández University (Alicante, Spain) and at the Faculty of Medicine of Castilla-La Mancha University (Albacete, Spain). I have also been a part-time Assistant Professor in Histology at the Faculty of Medicine of Castilla-La Mancha University from December 2003 to September 2011 and from December 2016 to May 2017.

My research has mostly focussed on the cellular, molecular and genetic substrates of brain disease, currenly: epilepsy and rare neurological syndromes. Together with the neuropediatrician Dr. M. Carmen Carrascosa, also from the Hospital General Universitario de Albacete (Spain), I am affiliated with the European Network NETRE (Network Therapy Rare Epilepsies) which intends to find individualized treatments for rare genetic epileptic syndromes. Regarding rare diseases, I am collaborating with Dr. Javier Solera, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine of our Hospital to study clinical and molecular markers of Satoyoshi syndrome. Recently, I am also involved in the research on the biomedical properties of the deer antler velvet extract and collaborate in the study of the kinetics of the immune response to the BNT162b2 vaccine against the SARS-CoV2 virus.
