Biography
Licensed with extraordinary prize and second national prize for completion of university studies in mathematics (1993), doctor in mathematical sciences (1997) from the Universitat de València (UV) with the thesis entitled “Finite p-groups” under the supervision of Antonio Vera López. I am since 2020 a university professor at the Faculty of Mathematics of the UV, where I have been serving since 2013. Previously I have served at the UV (1993-1997, as an associate professor and with a predoctoral contract) and at the Department of Applied Mathematics of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV, 1997-2013). I have taught undergraduate/degree subjects in Mathematics and doctoral/master's degrees in Mathematics, as well as undergraduate/engineering subjects in Computer Science and Data Science. I have supervised 2 doctoral theses and 5 master's theses/third-cycle research projects. I have also been co-author of 4 teaching books on discrete mathematics, group theory, and category theory, and several books of proceedings of conferences and other activities.
My research work has contributed notably to the progress of knowledge in abstract group theory, linear algebra, automata theory and formal languages and in the theory of braces and the Yang-Baxter equation, answering open questions in these theories and opening new lines of research. I have published 85 scientific articles in prestigious international journals that appear in very prominent positions in the most internationally recognised impact lists. The number of citations of my publications is 1227, with an h-index equal to 17, taking Google Scholar (GS) as a source.
One of my most remarkable contributions in the structure of finite groups is the book
1. A. Ballester-Bolinches, R. Esteban-Romero, M. Asaad. “Products of finite groups”. W. de Gruyter, 2010.
It summarises the knowledge related to groups that are products of two subgroups linked by permutability properties and groups in which permutabilty or Sylow permutability are transitive. It has become a basic reference in this area, with 435 citations to date (GS). Another remarkable contribution is the software
2. A. Ballester-Bolinches, E. Cosme-Llópez, R. Esteban-Romero. “Permut: A package to deal with permutability in finite groups”.
This is an accepted package after a refereeing process, distributed since 2014 with the computer algebra system GAP, and that contains functions to chck permutability related properties with GAP. I have been acquiring experience with GAP and other software since the development of my doctoral thesis.
My research lines include the analysis of the structure of finite groups by means of permutability-like properties and embedding properties, automata and formal languages, linear algebra, and braces and the Yang-Baxter equation.
I have participated in 13 competitive research projects funded by national (10) and international (3) public organisations from 1998 to the present. My participation in international research groups from China, France and the Dominican Republic has been partially financed by the 3 research projects funded by international organisations.
I have participated in international research groups based in Saudi Arabia (1), Australia (1), Belarus (1), Egypt (2), United States (2), Italy (2), Israel (1), Netherlands (1), People's Republic of China (3), Dominican Republic (1), South African Republic (1), Ukraine (1).
I have presented papers at 52 international conferences, 15 of them as a keynote speaker.
I am an advisor (referee) to more than 70 scientific journals, member of the editorial board of 2 scientific journals and reviewer of “Mathematical Reviews” and “zbMath”. I have made 10 visits to various foreign universities in Australia, Dominican Republic, France, and Italy within the framework of collaboration projects, in which I have taught postgraduate courses, given talks, and carried out research tasks.
I am an advisor to Spanish and foreign (Colombia) project evaluation agencies. I have been an evaluator of postgraduate works and doctoral theses at other universities, as well as I have advised hiring and promotion committees at other universities.
I have been recognised for 6 5-year teaching periods and 4 6-year research periods.
I am head of the Department of Mathematics of the UV since December 2022 and I have participated at several committees of the department, the faculty, and the university, in UV and UPV. I have also been deputy secretary and secretary of the RSME.
