Biography
Sara González-García obtained her degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC, Spain) in 2005 being awarded with the Extraordinary Prize of End of career in Chemical Engineering. Sara González-García completed her Doctoral Thesis “Environmental Assessment of Wood and Non-Wood Based Products” at the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at the University of Santiago de Compostela under the supervision of Prof. María Teresa Moreira and Prof. Gumersindo Feijoo in September 2009 with European mention and being awarded with the distinction Cum Laude and Extraordinary Prize. During her PhD studies, Sara performed research stays in the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden under the supervision of Dr. Staffan Berg (4 months, 2007) and the Department of Industrial Ecology at Leiden University under the supervision of Gjalt Huppes (4 months, 2008). Sara carried out her Ph.D. studies funded by the Spanish National Program “FPU fellowship” (2006-2010).
After her Ph.D., she conquered 2 competitive postdoctoral fellowships granted by the Spanish and Galician Governments to support her research on the identification and quantification of the environmental impacts of industrial activities related with forest, food and bioenergy sectors as well as with product ecodesign. During this period, she hold positions as postdoctoral researcher for 3 months at the European Forest Institute (2009, Finland), 1.5 years at the Department of Life Sciences in the Imperial College of London (2010-2011, United Kingdom) and 1.5 years at the Department of Environment and Planning in the University of Aveiro (2012-2014, Portugal).
Sara successfully competed in the Spanish National Program “Juan de la Cierva” at the age of 30 and was ranked in the 1st position in the area of Chemical Technology with a qualification 100/100. She joined the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at USC in April 2014. In February 2014, she obtained the positive assessment by the ANECA as “Profesor Contratado Doctor”, “Profesor Ayudante Doctor” and “Profesor de Universidad Privada”.
In January 2015, at the age of 32, Sara González-García successfully competed in the Spanish National Program “Ramón y Cajal” and was ranked 1st position in the area of Chemical Technology (the average age of this program is 38) with a qualification 100/100. She started her 5 years senior researcher contract Ramon y Cajal in January 2016 at USC, which represented the consolidation in the Dept. of the Environmental Management – Life Cycle Assessment research line.
In 2012, she carried out a 2 weeks research stay at the School of Engineering - Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Chile). In 2018, she carried out a 2.5 months research stay at the Department of Environment and Planning in the University of Aveiro (Portugal).
In November 2016, Sara González-García received the Young research award “Agustin de Betancourt y Molina” medal by Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering.
Her scientific production encompasses 149 peer-review SCI publications (136 publications in Q1, 11 in Q2 and 2 in Q3), 5 non-SCI papers (one of them in Education for Chemical Engineers), 11 book chapters and 141 contributions to international conferences (72 oral presentations, 4 keynotes).
Her current h-index is 41 (Scopus) and a total of 4428 citations (Scopus 7/22). She have been involved in 27 competitive research projects (8 European projects, 8 National projects, 10 Regional projects and 1 BBVA project) and 14 industry-funded contracts (2 as PI).
She has been identified in a recent international study published in Environmental Impact Assessment Review from the bibliometric analysis of more than 20,000 studies published in the period 1999-2018 on LCA methodology as the 5th researcher worldwide with the highest number of publications on this topic. She is included in the TOP 2% of most cited researchers according to the list elaborated by Stanford University. A bibliometric study of LCA research in the period 1998-2013 published in the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment highlights the 6th position of the research group to which the candidate belongs worldwide, being also the leader of Spanish universities in this field. Finally, she occupies the position 667/1000 in the Reuters Hot List which includes the world's leading scientists in 2020 in the field of Climate Change, in the CSIC ranking (2022) occupies the position 2218 (50 in the USC) and in the Research.com portal in the period 2014-21 occupies the positions 41 and 1850 at national and world level in the area of Environmental Sciences and 55 and 1950 at national and world level in the area of Engineering and Technology.
