Biography
Fernando Lopes was born in Abrantes (Portugal) on September 18th, 1963. He received the M.Sc. degree in Computer Science and the Ph.D. degree in Artificial Intelligence from the Technical University of Lisbon (IST). He was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Liverpool, UK, where he carried out research in autonomous agents and multi-agent systems, notably agent-mediated negotiation, in collaboration with Prof. Michael Wooldridge. Recently, he received the title of aggregate in the field of Energy from the Nova University of Lisbon.
Fernando Lopes is currently a researcher at the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG), Lisbon, Portugal. His research interests include liberalized energy markets, renewable energy integration, distributed energy resources, intelligent agents, and applications of agent-based computer systems, The research work is interdisciplinary in nature and involves methods and techniques from energy and power systems, as well as computer science and economics. He has developed an agent-based simulation tool for energy markets, called MATREM (for Multi-Agent TRading in Electricity Markets), which have been applied in several research projects to help performing experimental studies.
Fernando Lopes is the editor and main author of a book about electricity markets with increasing levels of renewable generation, published by Springer, in 2018. He is also the main editor of a book about negotiation and argumentation in multi-agent systems, published by Bentham Science, in 2014. He submits on a regular basis articles to scientific journals. He also participates on a regular basis in international conferences as a paper author. He has more than 100 publications, some of them honored with academic distinctions.
Fernando Lopes is an editorial board member of the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence. He acts as an editor of several international conference and workshop proceedings, notably the workshop MASGES (Multi-agent Based Applications for Smart Grids and Sustainable Energy Systems), which he has organized over the past 10 years as part of the conference PAAMS. He also acts as a program committee member of various international conferences. He was the editor of various scientific journal special issues.
Fernando Lopes is a member of the Portuguese Engineering Association and the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence. He regularly advises graduate students. He has taught several courses at the first, second and postgraduate levels. He has considerable experience of system development, notably multi-agent systems, database systems, and expert systems.
