Biography
Claudia Liebelt is a professor in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Free University of Berlin. Her primary research interests are in the anthropology of the body and the senses, gender and sexuality, care and intimacy, as well as pilgrimage and Islam in Turkey and the Middle East. She is the author of Istanbul Appearances: Beauty and the Making of Middle-Class Femininities (Syracuse UP, 2023) and Caring for the ‘Holy Land’: Filipina Domestic Workers in Israel (Berghahn, 2011) and has edited Beauty and the Norm: Debating Standardization in Bodily Appearance (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018), as well as a special journal issue on “Gendering ‘Everyday Islam’” (with Pnina Werbner, Contemporary Levant, 2018). Her articles appeared in Citizenship Studies, Journal of the Middle East Women’s Studies, Ethnos and Feminist Review. She is the review editor of Sociologus: Journal for Social Anthropology.
