Biography
Shruti brings deep expertise in semiconductor physics and machine learning along with 8 years of experience in industrial R&D (IBM Research, Google [X]) and AI-based start-ups (Embody, Commerce.ai).
In her early career as an experimentalist, Shruti published 16+ papers on design, fabrication and characterization of novel devices (diodes, transistors, lasers, filters) and materials (III-Vs, graphene, carbon nanotubes, conducting polymers). She was the first person to demonstrate a top-down approach towards a THz quantum-dot cascade laser for room temperature operation. She won several awards including the NanoDTC Associateship at Cambridge, Dr. Manmohan Singh Scholarship for graduate studies and International junior scientist travel award from the Institute for complex adaptive matter at UC Davis.
Shruti was among the founding team of researchers that launched IBM’s first cognitive experience lab in Africa where she developed improved algorithms for facial recognition using infrared images. She then co-founded 2 AI-based startups in the Bay Area, building teams and driving ideas from inception to production. At Embody, she led R&D to commercialization of machine-learning based personalized spatial audio, bringing 3D sound experiences to more than 20K users. Before founding her own startup (currently in stealth mode), Shruti worked at the intersection of materials and machine learning in the early-stage pipeline at X, the moonshot arm of Alphabet.
