Biography

Wayne Martin studied philosophy both in the UK and in the USA and taught for twelve years at the University of California, San Diego, before moving to Essex in 2005. He is Professor in the School of Philosophy and Art History, member of the Essex Human Rights Centre, and Director of the Essex Autonomy Project. His philosophical interests are diverse, ranging from the history of philosophy (especially post-Kantian idealism and phenomenology) to the medical humanities (especially philosophy of psychiatry, phenomenological approaches to mental health, and human rights). He is a past Head of both the Department of Philosophy and the School of Philosophy and Art History at Essex, past General Editor of Inquiry, and past Series Editor for for Modern European Philosophy (the monograph series at CUP). Past service to government bodies includes research support to the UK Ministry of Justice, testimony before the Northern Ireland Legislative Assembly, service on the Human Rights and Equality Topic Group of the Wessely Review, and invited research presentation before, inter alia, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the UK Equality and Human Rights Commission.
