Dr Thava Palanisami is Senior Lecturer within the Global Innovative Centre for Advanced Nanomaterials(GICAN), School of Engineering at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Thava has been involved in emerging contaminant research for the past 15 years. He is a research leader in the fields of the risk assessment and management of MicroNanoplastics, exposure assessment, plastic recycling, development of alternative plastic products. Over the past five years, Thava has made several contributions to the field of plastics risk assessment and remediation worldwide. Remediation technologies developed by Thava is currently under field trials. Outcomes from Thava's Plastic research has translated into environmental policy refinement for quantifying exposure to plastics and associated contaminants, both nationally and internationally. In 2020, Thava was invited by the U.S. National Academies for Science, Engineering and Medicine to deliver a lead talk on MicroNanoplastics and Human health. He has also contributed to the PNAS proceedings. Thava's team has derived the first-ever mass estimation of MicroNanoplastics Ingestion for human health risk assessment(https://yourplasticdiet.org/). In the same year, the European Research Council has also invited Thava in its Elite Reviewer Panel.
