He then carried out a research stay between August 1995 and June 1996 in the Cellular Biology Unit of the Municipal Institute of Medical Research of Barcelona, under the direction of Dr. Francisco X. Real. He carried out his Doctoral Thesis in the area of Molecular Oncology, between 1997-2002, studying the genetic alterations in human exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma, under the direction of Drs. Alfredo Carrato and Francisco X. Real. During this stage, he carried out a one-month predoctoral stay (01/2000) at the Molecular Oncology Unit of the Hammersmith Hospital in London. The defense of his doctoral thesis was in July 2002 at the University Miguel Hernández, with an outstanding qualification Cum Laude and Extraordinary Doctoral Award that year. During this stage, Dr. Barberá also collaborated in other research works in Molecular Biology of human tumors.
Later, he continued his training at the Department of Molecular Biology of the University of Texas, UTSouthwestern Medical Center at Dallas (USA), as a postdoctoral researcher in the research group led by Prof. Raymond J. MacDonald, during the period 2002-2004, collaborating in the research line Transcriptional factors and regulation of gene expression in the pancreatic organogenesis process.
On his return to Spain, he joined the Torres Quevedo Program of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, obtained in a public competitive call to the Research and Development Department of the private company LABAQUA S.A., where he participated in the technological development of molecular diagnostic systems based on gene expression, participating in two patents.
