Bibliography - Dr. Cho Wing SZE (GMCNS)
Dr. Cho Wing SZE completed his undergraduate studies in Biology in Hong Kong Baptist University with First Class Honors and subsequently received his PhD training in the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Study Exchange: Proteomics Unit, Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences, VU Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Jun 2002). Dr Sze continued his research study as a Post-doctoral fellow and Assistant Professor at School of Chinese Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Meanwhile, Dr Sze obtained his second degree (BChinPharm) in China Pharmaceutical University, China.
He is dedicated to research on healthy aging such as investigations on natural products/medicinal herbs capable of combating inflammation, neurodegeneration, cancer and postmenopausal sequelae etc. His research postgraduate students and postdoc fellows have all graduated with flying colors.
After gaining experience in research, administration and teaching in HKU, he returned to his alma mater in 2018 as Assistant Professor (Research) in Biology, and Assistant Director (Admin) at Golden Meditech Centre for NeuroRegeneration Sciences (GMCNS). He currently appointed as Assistant Professor & Associate Director at GMCNS. He is an Associate Research Fellow in Institute of Research and Continuing Education (Shenzhen), and member in State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis (SKLEBA).
Research interests with licensed patent:
Translational research and quality control in drug discovery from natural products (Chinese Medicine formulas, compounds and proteins) and regenerative medicine aimed at alleviating metabolic inflammation and mitigating neurodegeneration/inflammaging to bring about the much-desired healthy aging and disease prevention using approaches such as stem cell, network/systems pharmacological and quantitative proteomics approaches.
Investigation on the activity of yam protein DOI in extending the ovarian function during aging which would offer a new treatment strategy for delaying/ preventing diseases associated with menopause (brittle bone disease, impaired cognitive function, and cardiovascular disease), address the safety concerns of hormone replacement therapy, study will benefit post-menopausal individuals worldwide. Dr Sze is the First person at the previous working department, who obtained and successfully licensed a US patent (Patent No.: US9273105B2) in December 2016. Health supplements has been developed and the product has been launched to market in 2020. His research has also been highlighted by

Research funds:
He has met with phenomenal success in procuring a sizable amount of research funds from the government as well as the industry. After returning his alma mater in 2018, Dr Sze has secured over 12 million research funding as Principal Investigator from General Research Fund-supported project, Health and Medical Research Fund-supported project, and several HKBU/UGC supported contract research with UGC matching fund in the capacity of the Principal Investigator. Dr Sze has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal papers, with over 3400 citations and H-index of 31 (from Scopus).
Scholarly and Community Activities:
Currently, Dr Sze serves as an associate editor (Permanent) of Frontiers of Pharmacology, a journal of repute and as an editorial board member in several other journals. He also serves as an External Examiner, Board of Examiners (BoE) Meeting for Applied Science Programme Board for Health Programmes (PBHAS, High Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science) Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education. He has contributed to invited book chapters (“Healthy Ageing in Asia – Culture and Tradition in Prevention and Wellness” invited by Ministry of Health Malaysia Government; English Book Chapter for “Chinese Medicine Research”《中醫科研英語教程》人民衛生出版社) and was a speaker in local meetings and international conferences.
