Biography
Dr. Joni Carroll's research is motivated by what she sees in practice – the unfortunate, fragmented healthcare that people receive, the health disparities that exist, and the unmatched accessibility and potential of community-based pharmacists to help people live their healthiest lives possible. Dr. Carroll utilizes implementation and dissemination science principles to assist community pharmacists with: (1) their roles as public health providers and (2) building sustainable, equitable pharmacist-led patient care services. As a pharmacist and researcher, Dr. Carroll is passionate about bringing patients and stakeholders into the research and implementation process - not simply as research subjects, but as partners.
She has worked to implement widespread anti-stigma education surrounding opioid use disorder for pharmacists, student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians; STI testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections within community pharmacies; and co-led the development of a community pharmacy practice-based research network in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Joni Carroll is an Assistant Professor within the Community Leadership and Innovation in Practice (CLIP) Center at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, and she also serves as a Pharmacist with the Allegheny County Health Department. Dr. Carroll earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Mercyhurst University. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 2015 and went on to complete a PGY-1 pharmacy residency with an emphasis in ambulatory care at the Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany, New York. Dr. Carroll also completed a Pharmacist Practice Development Fellowship at The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in partnership with Gatti Pharmacy.
