Biography

I work to understand and conserve ecosystems into the future. My expertise in marine ecology and conservation developed from the urge to understand drivers of ecosystem change, which evolved into a multidisciplinary set of skills, spanning extensive fieldwork, 3D remote sensing and advanced statistical modeling.

My research combines field and laboratory data to predict ecosystem trajectories across space and time. For example, I use 3D maps to quantify the change in coral reef structure as a result of environmental change impacts. The tools and models I have developed inform management of marine and coastal ecosystems in several countries.

At AIMS I lead the 3D modelling ecological capability used by the LTMP, EcoRRAP, ReefSong and ODR projects. I also advise on 3D modelling applications, especially in the field. As such I work across teams and projects to help develop the new generation of coral reef monitoring techniques and data. This requires a multidisciplinary collaboration, including computer scientists, benthic ecologists and software developers. I also work with external collaborators interested in developing similar capabiilty.

As the lead of the Field Integrated Program for EcoRRAP I work closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers to inform the where, what, how and when of restoration. As part of this project we have collected and process one of the world's largest datasets of scleractinian coral demography with over 10,000 colonies across many dominant taxa. These data can be access thruogh AIMS Metadata Record Repository (https://apps.aims.gov.au/metadata/view/fe9659f1-12d6-4acf-ab89-67acdd37efe5)
