Biography
He graduated in physics in 1987 from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain). Before and during his PhD (Yale University, 1994, USA), he worked with Prof. Juan Fernández de la Mora on aerodynamic focusing, electrospray atomization, and differential mobility analysis. As postdoctoral associate with Prof. John B. Fenn at Virginia Commonwealth University (1994-6, USA), he did research on electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. In 1996 he joined Aradigm Corporation (Silicon Valley, California, USA) to develop liquid micro-jet technology for inhalation drug delivery. There, he helped develop and study the AERx(TM) aerosol drug delivery system, and also co-discovered with Prof. Alfonso Gañán-Calvo (University of Sevilla, Spain) Flow Blurring liquid atomization. In 2004, he joined Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) in Tarragona, Spain, as an ICREA Research Professor (icrea.cat), where his research has focused on electrospray and electrospinning technology and its development for the manufacturing of nanomaterials. He currently leads the Droplets, intErfaces, and floWs (DEW) laboratory at URV. Recently, he has also lead another team to investigate the detection of contextual factors which encourage respiratory diseases transmission in school classrooms.
