Biography

Wei Si Nic Yiu (姚煒詩) is a Gender Studies PhD student, who also received a Master of Arts in Gender Studies at the University of Toronto, Canada. Their current research project explores what a concept of quiet could mean to how we think about Asian queer cultures of resistance. Moving away from the occularcentricism that Black scholars have already critiqued, they listen to and for quiet sounds to turn towards intimate moments that are revolutionary. By remaining open to the possibility of quiet, what different forms of intimacy and resistance emerge? Their work is informed and inspired by their own experiences of migration as a queer Asian in Hong Kong, Beijing, Toronto, and now Los Angeles. Their research is impossible without Black feminist and queer of color critique scholarship’s visionary world-making capacity. They are a core member of the Black Feminist Initiative at the Center for the Study of Women.
