Biography

Proffessor of Civil and Coastal Engineering (Gazi University, Turkey).Can E. Balas has been working for 20 years at the Gazi University, section of Fluid Mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering.
He graduated with MSc (1992) and PhD (1998) from METU (Middle East Technical University. He has been working at the Gazi University since 2010 as Professor the department of Hydraulics at GU (Gazi University). His main fields of research are risk analysis of coastal structures like breakwater, harbor, groin etc.
He has been involved in the organization of seven national and international conferences on Coastal Areas Management in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. He has participated in internationally certified training programs on Coastal Zone Management. It is a member of the International Mediterranean Coast Foundation (MEDCOAST), which was established in 2007. Coastal Zone Management in Turkey National Committee of Directors.
He supervised 5 Ph.D. students, 10 Master’s students, which are related to coastal phenomena.
Professor BALAS has been assessors for many promotions to Professor/Associate Profes- sor/Assistant Professor in many universities of Turkey.
Assistant Project Manager, established in 1990, is Turkey's National Coastal Zone Management Committee members. He has participated in national and international congresses, conferences, workshops, seminars and courses from 1997 until the present day on Coastal Areas Management.
The coastal environment and coastal structures expert, Can Elmar Balas, have been done the following designs: prevention of coastal erosion or sanding, protection of coastal zone from flood, design of sea discharges, solution of environmental pollution problems, discharge, wave, tide, wind etc. coastal protection and regulation projects, sand transport modeling, marine discharge modeling, water quality modeling, coastal protection and rehabilitation projects, marine transport modeling, water quality modeling, hydrodynamic and transport modeling, design of headwork, breakwater and groins, design of weight type and caisson breakwaters, design of submerged breakwaters, dynamic equilibrium design of breakwaters, statistical design based on risk and reliability, expertise in design issues with Monte Carlo Simulation.
