Biography
Since the earliest steps of my scientific career as a PhD student in the late 90’s, I have been combining teaching duties at the University of Oviedo (Spain) with scientific research in the fields of Tectonics and Geophysics.
I taught many different subjects in the Degrees of Geology, Engineering Geology and Mining Engineering, as well as in the Master of Geological Resources and Engineering Geology. Some of these subjects are: Structural Geology, Geological Mapping, Fieldwork, General Geology, Geology of the Subsoil, Geology Applied to Mining Technology Engineering, Global Dynamics and Plate Tectonics, Geophysics, Geodynamics, Geophysical and Geochemical Prospecting, Tectonics, Seismology and Seismic Engineering, and Seismic and Volcanic Risk.
My research is mainly focused in the study of the processes responsible for the lithospheric structure and tectonic evolution of the Pyrenean-Cantabrian Mountain Belt and the North-Iberian Continental Margin. In these studies, I followed multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, integrating geological and geophysical observations from a wide variety of sources and methodologies: seismic refraction and wide angle reflection profiles, teleseismic receiver functions, seismic anisotropy, traveltime tomography, ambient noise tomography, magnetotelluric profiles, potential field modeling (gravity, geoid, magnetism), isotope geochemistry, low temperature thermochronology, geological mapping, structural reconstructions, etc. These studies contributed to the knowledge of the 3D structure of the crust at the boundary between the European plate and the Iberian subplate, and its extensional-contractional lithospheric evolution during the Mesozoic-Cenozoic.
Since 2013, I also participated in structural and tectono-metamorphic studies in the Andes, aimed at identifying and characterizing pre-Andean (Paleozoic) orogenic events.
I was co-IP of an Individual Project within the European Science Fundation EUROCORES Topo-Europe Program and participated in 5 projects from the Spanish National Research Plan, 1 project from the Asturian Regional Research Plan and 5 contracts with energy companies. I have long experience in the acquisition of seismic data in several countries: Chile (CONDOR Project, 1995), México (CORTES, 1996), Portugal (TTTSS, 1996), Tibet-Qinghai (HATHOR, 1998), Bay of Biscay - Hesperides vessel (MARCONI, 2003; RG-2, 2003), Dominican Republic (GEOPRICO-DO, 2005) and many other seismic experiments in the Cantabrian Mountains of North Iberia.
I also participated in many outreach activities, among which I would highlight up to 14 courses taught to secondary school teachers, 30 talks in secondary schools and 7 geological fieldtrips for secondary school students and for the general public.
