Biography
Giovanna Ferraioli, MD is a Researcher at Department of Clinical, Surgical, Diagnostic and Pediatric Sciences of Medical School University of Pavia, (Italy). Her research interests include elastography in diffuse liver diseases, noninvasive assessment of liver steatosis, ultrasound contrast agents, and Doppler in portal hypertension.
Dr. Ferraioli received her medical degree from Naples University, Italy. In 1988-89 she completed a research fellowship at the Yale University, USA, with Prof. Kenneth JW Taylor and Prof. Roberto J Groszmann.
She is the coordinator of the Ultrasound School at Fondazione IRCCS San Matteo Hospital Foundation, Medical School of the University of Pavia (Italy), and co-director of the EFSUMB Ultrasound Learning Center (ULC) at the same Institution.
Dr. Ferraioli has delivered several invited lectures in her area of expertise to international audiences.
She's Head of the Ultrasound section of the Scientific Editorial Board of European Radiology; subspecialty Editor of Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, Member of the Editorial Board of the following journals: World Journal of Gastroenterology, Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, Diagnostics, Journal of Ultrasound, Journal of Liver & Clinical Research, International Journal of Radiology, Case Reports in Internal Medicine.
She’s referee ad hoc for more than 60 international journals.
She has been appointed General Secretary of MASU (Mediterranean and African Society of Ultrasound) for the triennium 2011-2013 and 2013-2015.
Dr. Ferraioli has been a member of the Education Committee of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) for the triennium 2013-2015, and she's a member of the Publication Committee and of the Student Committee for the triennium 2023-2025.
She has been member of the WFUMB expert panel for the guidelines on elastography released by WFUMB (2015) and member of WFUMB expert panel for the update of the guidelines on liver elastography (2018). She leads the WFUMB Steering Committee for “Multiparametric Ultrasound: Update to WFUMB 2018 elastography guidelines and consensus on fat quantification”.
She has been a member of the consensus panel of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) for the use of shear wave in the evaluation of liver fibrosis (2014-2015) and of the SRU consensus panel for its update (2019-2020).
She has been a member of EFSUMB expert team for the guidelines on liver elastography (2016-2017) and member of the DELPHI Panel for the 2021 update of EASL guidelines for evaluation of liver disease severity and prognosis.
She's a member of the QIBA initiative in shear wave speed in diffuse liver diseases; member of the AIUM Liver Fat Quantification Force; co-chair of the attenuation group of the AIUM-RSNA QIBA Pulse Echo Quantitative Ultrasound (PEQUS) Biomarker Committee; member of ACR LIRADS Quantitative Imaging Work Group.
She's qualified as Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases and Gastroenterology at ASN 2017.
She's visiting Professor at "Victor Babes” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Timisoara (Romania), honorary member of the Romanian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (SRUMB), chair for the Elastography Community of Practice for the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM).
She's Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM).
Dr. Ferraioli has published several scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals, including Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology, Gut, Radiology, European Radiology, Digestive and Liver Disease, American Journal of Roentgenology, Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology.
She's member of the following scientific societies: European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), European Society of Radiology (ESR), American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM,Fellow), Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF), Italian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (SIUMB).
