Biography
Sevgi Aka is a conceptual artist and academic. Her three-dimensional investigations and installation works deal with physical and conceptual absence as a field of possibility. She studied art history in Celaya, Mexico, visual arts in Sabanci University (BA, MA), Istanbul and School of the Art Institute Chicago (BFA). She completed her Doctorate in Dokuz Eylul University with the thesis: “Absence as Potential in Contemporary Art”.
Her solo exhibition Leaking from Sleep took place in Gallery A, Izmir, TR (2023). She has shown Geri Dönüş’üm (Re-cycle / my Re-Turn), spatial intervention, an ex-gallery and a new recycle center, Istanbul (2023) and The Belly of the Whale, a spatial intervention on Bosphorus, Istanbul (2022) and I am not West, I am not East, performance, Kotti-Shop Project Space, Berlin (2022). Her works were shown in group exhibitions including, Water-Bound, Theater Aufbau Kreuzberg, Berlin (2024), Words on Water, Hinterland, Vienna (2023), Yapı Kredi Culture and Arts, Istanbul (2022), Barın Han, Istanbul (2022), Art On Gallery, Istanbul (2020), Hahmekan, Istanbul (2017), The Clemente, Abrazo Interno Gallery, NY (2015), among others.
She attended Daire Artist Residency, co-funded by EU and TR (2019) and Cura Bodrum Residency (2010). She co-organized “The Absent Monument of Kreuzberg, a Multidisciplinary Workshop”, which received Kreuzberg District Artistic Grant, hosted by Museum FHXB, Berlin (2022). She was a visiting scholar/artist in various universities and institutions, gave talks, workshops and lectures. She presented papers in conferences and published articles. Currently, she works as an assistant professor at Istanbul Topkapı University and teaches visual arts. In 2024, she received her Associate Professorship from the Higher Education Council of Turkey.
