Biography

Giovanni Iamartino is Full Professor of English at the University of Milan, where he teaches courses in the History of English, Middle English Literature, and English Linguistics. His research interests focus on translation history and historiography, the history of lexicography (and linguistic codification in general), and the history of Anglo-Italian linguistic and cultural relations.

He previously worked at the Catholic University of Milan and the University of Sassari. In Milan he served as Head of Department for 10 years between 2003 and 2021; he was also Director of SILSIS-MI (2008-2010) and Coordinator of the department’s PhD programme (2014-2015).

Iamartino’s research appointments include the following: PI of 4 biennial national research projects (PRIN) between 2005 and 2023; 4 research fellowship and travel grants awarded by US research centres between 2014 and 2019; co-chair of HoLLT.net, the Research Network for the History of Language Learning and Teaching, since 2016; editor or advisory board member of various academic journals and book series.

As to Iamartino’s involvement in associations and learned societies, he was President of AIA, the Italian Society for English Studies (2015-2019); currently, he is Vicepresident of SISSD, the Italian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, and member of the Executive Committee of ISECS, the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ISECS). Iamartino is also a Corresponding Fellow di The English Association (since 2003), an elected member of The Samuel Johnson Society of North America (since 2009), of Istituto Lombardo – Accademia di Scienze e Lettere (since 2009), and of the International Association of University Professors of English (IAUPE, since 2010).

Often a speaker at conferences held in Italy, Iamartino attended, sometimes as a guest-speaker, conferences held in the following countries: Austria (Innsbruck); Brasil (Rio de Janeiro); Canada (Edmonton and Kingston); Croatia (Split); Finland (Helsinki); France (Lorient); Germany (Augsburg, Berlin, Delmenhorst); Great Britain (Edinburgh, Leicester, London, Nottingham, Oxford, Reading and Warwick); India (Manipal and Chandigarh); Malta (La Valletta); Russia (Ivanovo and Moscow); Spain (Granada); Switzerland (Zurich); Turkey (Istanbul); USA (Bloomington, IN, Cambridge, MA and San Antonio, TX).

Iamartino chaired the scientific and organizing committees of 12 international conferences (held either in Milan or in the University of Milan’s conference centre in Gargnano del Garda) between 1995 and 2022.
