Biography
Dr. Lorea Valcárcel is a Ramón y Cajal, Ikerbasque and CRIS Cancer foundation researcher at the UPV/EHU. She studied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UPV/EHU, and after her master studies at the University of Barcelona in Molecular Biotechnology, in 2024 she started her PhD in Biomedicine at the CICbioGUNE (Bizkaia) in the Cancer Cell signaling lab directed by Dr. Arkaitz Carracedo. During her PhD, Lorea studied the role of the transcriptional co-regulator PGC1A in modulating prostate cancer aggressiveness and metabolism. After her PhD, she joined Prof. Christian Frezza laboratory at the MRC-Cancer Unit (later CECAD, University Cologne) to study oncogenic events associated with FH-deficiency in renal tumours. In 2022, she joined as a Juan de la Cierva Incorporación the laboratory of Dr.Verónica Torrano to analyse the modulation of ECM in prostate cancer progression.
In 2025, she started her independent research lines aiming at identifying oncogenic events in renal cancer. Especifically, the role of the tumour microenvironment and metabolism in renal cancer progression and aggressiveness. Her aim is to exploit these findings to establish novel therapeutic strategies and diagnostic tools for renal cancer.
