Biography
As an Alzheimer's Association-funded Independent Research Fellow at Sussex Neuroscience, University of Sussex, UK, and a Team Leader at the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) at Yobe State University, Nigeria, my work has advanced our understanding of the basic mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease, specifically on the mechanism of amyloid beta toxicity and the role of Tau protein in normal physiology and neurodegeneration. My expertise in these areas directs my ongoing research into the role of ancestry on Alzheimer's disease mechanisms.
I earned a BSc in Human Anatomy from the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria, an MSc in Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience, and a PhD in Neuroscience, both from the University of Sussex, UK.
In addition to my research, I am deeply committed to open science and passionate about inspiring and training the next generation of scientists. Since 2013, I have organized and participated in numerous public and policy outreach projects in Africa and the UK, fostering a culture of curiosity and learning. My dedication to nurturing scientific talent has led me to found and lead various large-scale international projects in neuroscience and science communication in Africa, with the goal of advancing global understanding of the brain in health and disease, in a manner that is accessible and engaging for all.
