Biography

Luis Samper is the Managing Partner of 4.0 Brands, a consultancy that works in different angles of implementing intellectual property strategies, including Geographical Indications (GIs), sustainability and intellectual property, intangible valuation and branding and communication. He has worked in projects in Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin America. His clients include the World Intellectual Property organization (WIPO), FAO, the International Trade Centre, oriGIn, IP authorities in different countries, GI organizations and trade organizations such as the Tequila Regulatory Council and. the Colombian Cut Flowers Association.

Luis has over 15 years of experience in Geographical Indications and successfully led the process of defense and recognition process of Café de Colombia as a Protected Geographical Indication in the European Union and Switzerland, the first non-European GI to obtain such recognition, and Certification Mark status in the United States and Canada.

During his tenure as Chief Marketing Officer for the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC), he also supervised FNC´s Sustainability reports and brand and technology-based ventures. His different responsibilities included the development of an Intellectual Property based strategy for marketing Colombian coffee, including Denominations of Origin and Juan Valdez ® branded applications. He is also frequently invited to discuss and advice on the coffee industry.

He has been featured in two Harvard Business Case Studies, is recognized as a leading international expert in the field of Geographical Indications, has written a number of academic articles on the subject and is frequently invited to speak at global meetings on topics that include branding origin products, GIs and Sustainability. Luis was also president of Origin, the Geneva –Switzerland- based international network for GIs.

Samper has also been invited by European Union, WIPO and several domestic associations as lead speaker or panelist on Geographical Indications in several conferences, seminars and forums in Asia, Europe and Latin America including the Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications of 2005 (Parma-Italy), 2007 (Beijing-China), 2011 (Lima-Peru), and 2017 (Yangzhou- China).

Luis´ academic background includes an Economics degree and an MSc in Law, an MBA and a specialization in Intangible Valuation. He is co-author of different academic papers published in international journals, such as Food Policy, WIPO Working papers and the Journal of the Commons, and of the book “Juan Valdez, the Strategy Behind the Brand”. He is a Colombian national with significant international experience and has lived and worked in Europe and North America at different stages of his career.
